| Introduction: | Established in 1889, The Hongkong Electric Company, Limited (HK Electric) is one of the longest-established power companies in the world. The Lamma Power Station and Lamma Power Station Extension have a total installed capacity of 3,736MW with eight coal-fired units, five gas turbine units, one wind turbine, one 550kW solar power system and two combined cycle units. The station was developed in three stages. Stage I, which comprises three 250MW coal-fired units, was completed in 1984. Stage II, comprising three 350MW coal-fired units, one 55MW, and six 125MW gas turbines, was completed in 1991. Stage III, comprising two 350MW coal-fired units, was completed in 1997. In 2002, two 125MW gas turbines were converted to a combined cycle unit with generation capacity of 345MW. Furthermore, the first 335MW gas-fired combined cycle unit was synchronised and started its commercial operation in 2006. The tour will let our members to visit the visitor centre, coal yard area and turbine hall of gas-fired generating unit. |

Speak Out for Engineering CompetitionThe competition is organised annually by the Institution of Mechanical Engineer. It was originally established in 1964 to challenge young engineers to prove that they could ‘communicate effectively’, which is still an important area for today’s developing engineers. In 1977 Her Majesty gave permission for the competition to be known as ‘The Queen’s Silver Jubilee Competition’ (QSJ). The Competition has been adapted over the course of time to allow for greater participation, but the original theme of ‘communicating effectively’ still remains the emphasis of the competition and in 2004 changed its name to ‘Speak Out for Engineering” Presentation Competition (QSJ). |
