YMS Chairman's message 2000
One day in 1997, a group of young engineers had a meeting in a meeting room at HKIE HQ brainstorming on what they could do for the young mechanical engineers in Hong Kong. Ir Denise Kee, who became our first YMS Chairperson said, 'The idea of having a Young Members Section in the HK branch came from a letter to the UK main branch which suggested that something should be done for the young members who also contribute to IMechE¡K'
After 3 years of exploring ideas and hard working of my colleagues, YMS has formed its shape. It is now playing an active role in organizing technical seminars, visits, social gatherings and talks for the engineering society. It was rewarded with good attendance.
Personally, I believe that YMS has a mission of being the home to all local young mechanical engineers, both studying and working. Besides organising normal activities, this year we will reach out to students - our future leaders. By working with the newly formed IMechE Student Chapter at PolyU and student groups at other tertiary institutions, we are now in a better position promoting IMechE membership and professionalism to students.
The success of YMS is highly dependent on your support. We now need more brains and hands in our committee. Suggestions and comments are always welcomed. If you think you can do something for YMS and other mechanical engineers, please contact us now by email!
