Institution of Mechanical Engineers IMechE

YMS Chairman's message

My impression on IMechE…

Being a committee member of IMechE for 5 years, I have witnessed the growth and expansion of the institution. Under the leadership of my predecessors, the institution has evolved in a scale much larger than I could ever have imagined. Throughout these years, the young member committee and the student chapters have shown remarkable growth in terms of number and dedication in the working board. With their dedication and efforts, IMechE is not only a competent body but has become an icon in the profession and the Universities. In my eyes, the institution has a lot of potential to go further.

My Visions...

The success of an organization depends on how well its members understand the goal of that organization. The same applies to a professional body like IMechE. I believe that increasing transparency and sharing institutional values with members can help strengthen the bond within the institution. By setting clear directions, all IMechE members can share the same vision and mission.

Collaboration is another important factor. “You can never eat with one chopstick”. The power and resources of one are always limited. In order to serve the interest of the profession and our members, collaboration with other professional bodies in or out of the industry will always be on our agenda.

My Strategic Framework…

Key Themes

An institution without clear directions is like sailing without a map. One way to help our members understand our directions is to identify “Themes” for our events. Each theme will feature a series of activities where members can extend their depth of understanding in a particular area. These themes will cover both technical and non-technical issues so that our members can enjoy vast opportunities to explore and develop both their technical knowledge and soft skills as an all-round engineer. In this year, three themes are identified:

“Sustainable Environment”

Sustainability and Environmental Protection has always been the focus of public debate for many years. The government, and even the public are seeing the adverse effects of technology on the environment starting to kick in. As an engineer, we have the ability, and the responsibility to solve the problem. Raising the awareness in this issue is one of our key directions in this year.

“Mechanical Technologies”

As an institution for Mechanical Engineers, our main focus still rests on mechanical technologies. We shall continue to explore more opportunities for our members to witness and experience the industry by conducting visits and seminars. Intensive workshops for developing a particular technical skill are also on our agenda.

“Professional Development”

As an engineer in the 21st century, knowing the mathematics is not enough. We believe a competent engineer should be an all-rounder. This year, we are going to provide our members with vast opportunities to develop their soft skills to become fully professional. Some highlights in this area include: Presentation Skills Enhancement, Project Management Skills Development, Marketing Strategies Exploration and Occupational Safety and Health Issues Awareness.

Collaboration with other Professions

Although IMechE has been working with some professional bodies all these years, keeping a close relationship with existing collaborating bodies is only a small step. In the coming session, I hope that the institution can make a giant leap forward by exploring more opportunities for cooperating with professional bodies from different backgrounds. I hope that this can promote IMechE’s professionalism to a wider scope and explore the horizons of our members.

My Wishes…

With the help of a group of dedicated advisors from the IMechE main committee, enthusiastic young committee and a supportive back office, I hope that the institution will make a new chapter in the IMechE history.
